Ranking Gillian Flynn’s Books
From least favourite to most favourite
Gillian Flynn came on my reading radar in 2018 when I had just shifted to Melbourne and was unsuccessfully applying to new jobs. I was fortunately living near an excellent public library and feeling that my life could benefit from some literary spice I decided to plunge into the domestic thriller genre which was the rage during that time. Big Little Lies was reigning supreme on HBO and one my friends was also reading it.
I’ve already mentioned in a previous post that I’m not a fan of the domestic thriller genre. It feels like a feeble topic, aimed at spicing up the humdrum suburban wife’s life by letting them fantasize about an alternate reality where their lives could be much more exciting (or worse), whilst still being a suburban housewife. It involves cheating, scandal, back-stabbing and the occasional murder. I don’t mind the topics — but I do have an issue with how many domestic thrillers either centre around these topics only or love wallowing in their own misery and self righteousness. It’s deeply uncomfortable and besides they don’t provide any answer to these issues.
I wasn’t a fan even then — but I had seen Gone Girl a few years before and I was confident that Gillian Flynn was the best author to start with. Thank God for that decision — cuz I’m already maxed out and I…
